The main inspiration for this painting was Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. In the story, Romeo and Juliet are two lovers from feuding families who forbid their relationship. Trying to escape, Juliet fakes her own death, hoping to reunite with Romeo later. Tragically, Romeo is unaware of the plan, finds her seemingly dead, and drinks poison in despair. When Juliet awakens and sees him dead, she takes her own life with his dagger. The idea behind this painting was to portray the two lovers desperately trying to seek each other out even after death.
